Best from Lithuania – welcome the Hoptrans Sirenos!

Best from Lithuania – welcome the Hoptrans Sirenos!

We continue our journey into the summer and welcome the 2016 champions and the 2017 runners-up of Lithuania – Hoptrans Sirenos!

Lithuania is a country of basketball for 80 years now. Lithuanian men won the EuroBasket 1937 in Riga and since then it`s the hotbed of hoops.

It didn`t took long for the Lithuanian women to follow in the footsteps of their men. Lithuania won the silver medal in the inaugural EuroBasket Women 1938 held in Rome trailing only to the hosts – Italy.

Fifty nine years later the Lithuanians went all the way to become the EuroBasket Women 1997 champions in Budapest, Hungary.

A team from Vilnius – Lietuvos Telekomas – flourished in club scene, playing in the EuroLeague Women for 12 seasons in a row (2000-2012) and reaching the Final Four twice (2005, 2006).

Jurgita Štreimikyte-Virbickiene had a brilliant career in club level, becoming the second best scorer in the EuroLeague Women history.

The tide of ebb followed the tide of flood – Lithuania didn`t qualified for the EuroBasket Women for the first time since 2003. No worries – the Lithuanians will be back!

Hoptrans Sirenos won the 2016 Lithuanian championship and last season represented country in the EuroCup Women, going up against CEKK Cegled from Hungary, Sparta&K from Russia and Maccabi Ashdod from Israel.
