May 19 is a national holiday of Turkey since 1938. This day is especially important for Samsun – a coastal city located on the southern shores of the Black Sea. Welcome our second new team Samsun Canik Belediye!
Samsun is a scenic and historic place. Three millenniums ago, 1000-2000BC, it was the homeland of the legendary Amazon women tribe. Today there is a impressive monument and seaside park dedicated to these women.
Twenty nine centuries later Samsun became the birthplace of the Turkish Republic when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk landed here on May 19, 1919 to start Independence war. Republic eventually was proclaimed four years later – on October 30, 1923 but Ataturk`s historic legacy started in Samsun.
Recently Samsun has been involved in various European competitions. In 2013 it was the home for the European U20 championship for Women. Last December it hosted the 2013 FIBA European U18 championship for Men with five tickets to the 2017 FIBA U19 World championship at stake.
Samsun Canik Belediye has participated twice in EuroCup Women (2010, 2017). Its most memorable win in tournament came on October 13, 2016 when Samsun ended a 13 year run of Chevakata Vologda to qualify for the regular season.
Team finished the Bilyoner.com Kadinlar Basketbol League (KBL) with a 7-19 record and 12th place. Its chances were heavily affected in the beginning of season after the passing of head coach Mehmet Can Ozturk. Samsun overcame difficulties and secured a place in the top flight of Turkey.
