The 2017/2018 season will feature three teams from South East Europe and the Black Sea region, including the champions of Bulgaria – Haskovo 2012.
Bulgaria is a country with rich basketball history. It was a European women`s basketball powerhouse for more than 40 years.
A South East European country accumulated 18 consecutive (!) EuroBasket Women Top 8 finishes between 1952 and 1985. It added three more successful Final Round appearances in 1989, 1991 and 1993, including the bronze medal in Varna back in 1989.
Bulgaria has 10 EuroBasket Women medals: gold in 1958, silver in 1960, 1964, 1972, 1983 and 1985, bronze 1954, 1962, 1976 and 1989. Niza Borisova was the best scorer of EuroBasket Women 1964.
It is a third EuroBasket Women champion after Italy and Soviet Union. Bulgaria remained the last new European champion until 1993, when Spain conquered the first of its three titles, followed by two more in 2013 and 2017.
Haskovo 2012 is a new and ambitious club from Haskovo – a city situated almost halfway between the capital Sofia and Istanbul.
The most famous person from Haskovo is a tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, a former semifinalist at Wimbledon (2014) and Australian Open (2017). Currently residing in Monte Carlo, he has won six ATP titles.
Haskovo 2012 was founded in 2012 by doctor Mr. Georgi Gelov and former Bulgaria National team captain Mr. Stanislav Stankov. The club has won seven cups and medals in various competitions, including the Cup of Bulgaria (2017) and the Bulgarian championship (2017).
Team has four consecutive medals in the national championship – bronze in 2014 and 2015, silver in 2016 and gold in 2017, as well as two runner-up finishes in the Cup of Bulgaria (2014, 2015). Best team in Haskovo city (2014, 2015, 2016).
